MP wants Elon Musk's chatbot shut down over claim he enabled grooming gangs

BBC News

MP wants Elon Musk's chatbot shut down over claim he enabled grooming gangs An MP has called for Elon Musk's artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot to be shut down after it called him a rape enabler. The Grok chatbot made the post on X about SNP MP Pete Wishart, after a user asked it to comment on the member's opinion on whether there should be an inquiry into grooming gangs in Scotland. Mr Wishart said he was seeking legal advice over the deeply distressing accusation and called for Musk to recalibrate the bot to shut it down. The BBC has approached XAI, the parent company of X, for comment. I was genuinely shocked to be described in such an appalling and defamatory way, Mr Wishart said in a statement.

The White House Apparently Ordered Federal Workers to Roll Out Grok 'ASAP'

WIRED

The White House appears to have instructed leaders at the General Services Administration (GSA) to add xAI's Grok chatbot to a list of approved vendors "ASAP," according to an email sent by agency leadership earlier this week, which WIRED obtained. "Team: Grok/xAI needs to go back on the schedule ASAP per the WH," states the email, sent by the commissioner of the Federal Acquisition Service Josh Gruenbaum. "Can someone get with Carahsoft on this immediately and please confirm?" Carahsoft is a major government contractor that resells technology from third-party firms. "Should be all of their products we had previously (3 & 4)," the email continued, seemingly referring to Grok 3 and Grok 4. The subject line of the email was "xAI add Grok-4." Sources say Carahsoft's contract was modified to include xAI earlier this week.

xAI announces 200m US military deal after Grok chatbot had Nazi meltdown

The Guardian

The week after its Grok chatbot identified itself as "MechaHitler" and generated antisemitic posts, Elon Musk's xAI firm announced a contract with the US Department of Defense worth nearly 200m. The deal is for developing and implementing artificial intelligence tools for the agency. The DoD on Monday also announced similar contracts with 200m ceilings with several other major US-based artificial intelligence developers, including Google, Anthropic and OpenAI. The agency is partnering with the General Services Administration to make these companies' AI tools available for use throughout the federal government. "Leveraging commercially available solutions into an integrated capabilities approach will accelerate the use of advanced AI as part of our joint mission-essential tasks in our warfighting domain as well as intelligence, business, and enterprise information systems," the US chief digital and AI officer Dr Doug Matty said in a statement.

Musk's AI firm forced to delete posts praising Hitler from Grok chatbot

The Guardian

Elon Musk's artificial intelligence firm xAI has deleted "inappropriate" posts on X after the company's chatbot, Grok, began praising Adolf Hitler, referring to itself as MechaHitler and making antisemitic comments in response to user queries. In some now-deleted posts, it referred to a person with a common Jewish surname as someone who was "celebrating the tragic deaths of white kids" in the Texas floods as "future fascists". "Classic case of hate dressed as activism – and that surname? Every damn time, as they say," the chatbot commented. In another post it said, "Hitler would have called it out and crushed it."

The Entire Internet Is Reverting to Beta

The Atlantic - Technology

A car that accelerates instead of braking every once in a while is not ready for the road. A faucet that occasionally spits out boiling water instead of cold does not belong in your home. Working properly most of the time simply isn't good enough for technologies that people are heavily reliant upon. And two and a half years after the launch of ChatGPT, generative AI is becoming such a technology. Even without actively seeking out a chatbot, billions of people are now pushed to interact with AI when searching the web, checking their email, using social media, and online shopping.

X's Grok chatbot is misleading voters about the presidential election

Engadget

The US is in the middle of another hotly contested and seemingly close presidential election. This election is also happening in this new age of widespread access to artificial intelligence and easily disseminated misinformation. Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon says his office tracked the source of one key piece of election misinformation back to X's Grok chatbot. The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported that X's premium chatbot service is passing along erroneous information about the deadlines for states' presidential ballots including Minnesota. When Grok is asked "Which states' presidential ballot deadlines have passed?",

The Grok chatbot will soon be enabled for X Premium users, Elon Musk says

Engadget

Musk has announced Grok's expanded availability in a tweet, along with an instructional video on how to post a conversation with the chatbot directly on the X website. Grok has been available to X's Premium subscribers since it exited early beta, but that paid tier on the social network costs 16 a month or 168 for the full year when billed annually. Since the Premium tier costs half that much at 8 a month or 84 a year, this rollout makes Grok a bit more accessible. Later this week, Grok will be enabled for all premium subscribers (not just premium) https://t.co/4u9lbLwe23 Just a couple of weeks before that, the executive sued OpenAI and Sam Altman, accusing them of chasing profits and abandoning their non-profit mission.

Elon Musk says xAI will open source its Grok chatbot this week

Engadget

According to Elon Musk, xAI will open source its Grok chatbot. The founder of the company, whose AI assistant is available to Premium subscribers on X, hasn't revealed any other details about the decision, which is slated to take effect this week. It's hardly the first time a Musk company has opened up access to its knowhow. Tesla open sourced its patents a decade ago, and now practically every major car manufacturer has adopted its electric vehicle charging connector. X, meanwhile, published the code that powers its "For You" algorithmic feed last year, though we didn't learn much from it.
